The Gershwins'

On June 5, 2011, members and

the the 1925 novel Porgy, written by DuBose Heyward who went on
to write a dramatic version for Broadway and eventually collaborated
with his wife Dorothy Heyward to write the libretto for the opera. Ira Gershwin
wrote the lyrics along with Heyward. The opera is a story of African American life
in the fictitious "Catfish Row" of Charleston, South Carolina and
portrays the Gullah people and their unique culture. The Court
Theatre creative team, led by Charles Newell as Director and Doug Peck
as Music Director and Orchestrator, has crafted a fresh interpretation

An Evening with Charles Troy
"The Creation of
Porgy and Bess"
On April 13, 2011, members
and guests of Sarah Siddons Society were treated to an evening with
Charles Troy, graphic designer and theatre historian. Held at the Woman's Athletic Club, the program
featured Troy's multimedia presentation of "The Creation of Porgy
and Bess." We were taken back to 1926 when George Gershwin
read the novel, Porgy, by DuBose Heyward and immediately
wrote to the author suggesting they collaborate on a folk opera
based on this novel about African-American life in the fictitious
"Catfish Row" in Charleston, South Carolina. And Porgy and Bess did
indeed become an opera, first performed in 1935, with music by
George Gershwin, libretto by DuBose Heyward, and lyrics by Ira
Gershwin and DuBose Heyward.
The evening included a
reception and cocktail buffet.
Working
On
March 24, 2011, members and guests of Sarah Siddons Society attended a
performance of the musical, Working, at the Broadway

Pulitzer Prize winning author, Studs Terkel, and adapted by Stephen
Schwartz and Nina Faso, the musical is an exploration of 26 people from all walks of
life, with songs by all-star composers including Lin-Manuel Miranda and
James Taylor.
The
Chicago production is an updated version of Working. The
stars this evening included Barbara Robertson( a past Sarah
Siddons Chicago's Leading Lady);
Gene Weygandt; Michael Mahler( a past Sarah Siddons Scholarship winner);
Genevieve VenJohnson; Gabriel Ruiz; and Emjoy Gavino. The director is Gordon Greenburg.
Backstage Tour of
Lyric Opera
On February 27, 2011, members
of Sarah Siddons Society met at the Chicago Lyric Opera House for
lunch in the Grand Foyer followed by a backstage tour. The ten-stop tour
was guided by Lyric's professional staff and trained volunteers with
interesting discussion and demonstrations by experts in various staging
areas. From the orchestra pit, to makeup and wardrobe, to props
and scenery, the tour gave insight as to how Lyric's stunning opera
performances are brought to life on stage.

All About Eve
the movie
On January 16, 2008, members and guests of the Sarah Siddons Society met
at Woman's Athletic Club for a viewing of the movie, All About Eve,
with a presentation by Greta Wiley from the book, All About "All
About Eve."
The movie, All About Eve, opens in the ballroom of a fictitious
Sarah Siddons Society. The occasion is the presentation of the
Sarah Siddons award statuette, modeled on Sir Joshua Reynolds' painting,
Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse. The powerful presence of
Sarah Siddons in All About Eve convinced a group of
theater fans in Chicago to found a real Sarah Siddons Society,
granting an actual award.
The evening also included a reception with wine and a
light buffet.
